The EU AI Act: what you need to know
What it's for
The EU AI Act is the European Union's law on artificial intelligence. One of its goals is transparency: readers have a right to know when the information they read on important topics was written by AI. This helps fight misinformation and protects public trust.
What it imposes
Since 2 August 2026, professional publishers must clearly label AI-generated text that informs the public on matters of public interest: health, medical & pharma, finance, politics, science, consumer safety, and more.
- The label must be clear and visible to readers.
- It applies to all content published in the EU, wherever the publisher is based.
- Failing to comply can lead to fines of up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide annual turnover.
Purely personal, non-professional use is not concerned.

How to skip the label
The law provides one exemption. Your AI-generated content doesn't need a label if both conditions are met:
- It has been reviewed by a qualified human. The review must examine the substance of the text, with fact-checking as a minimum. A quick proofread, a grammar check or a cursory approval doesn't count. This is what I do.
- A person or organization takes editorial responsibility for it, with contact details available to the public. This remains you, as the publisher: you decide what you publish and answer for it.
One more rule: if AI modifies the text again after my review, the exemption no longer applies, and the content must be reviewed again or labeled.
Amazon KDP and AI-generated books
Amazon accepts AI-generated books, on its own terms. Every time you publish a new book or republish an edited one, KDP asks whether it contains AI-generated content. Here's what that means:
- Text written by an AI tool
- Images created by AI, including your cover and interior artwork
- Translations produced by AI
- Even if you edited the content heavily afterwards
- You wrote the text, and AI helped you edit, refine or check it for errors
- You used AI to brainstorm ideas, but wrote the book yourself
